From one Russian hockey legend to another.

The National Hockey League goal scoring record that was held by Detroit Red Wings legend for second overall in history is officially no more, as Washington Capitals superstar captain and scoring machine Alex Ovechkin officially leapfrogged Howe in the NHL record books last season, scoring his 801st and 802nd career tallies.
Ovechkin is now second only to Wayne Gretzky’s mark of 894 goals scored, and it isn’t inconceivable to say that the Great 8 could eventually overtake Number 99 himself by the time his career is over. He's only 72 goals away after scoring a total of 42 in just 73 games in 2022-23.
And for his fellow Russian hockey legend and brief one-time teammate in Sergei Fedorov, he believes that the Great 8 will eventually be Number 1 in scoring by the time it's all said and done.
“You know, if you could look ahead, everyone would do it,” Fedorov started and as translated via Google Translate. “My answer is this. I want to wish Sasha good health, self-confidence, and great support from his loving family. Everything else is secondary. But, what you asked me, I think it will happen.”
Meanwhile, Ovechkin himself has said that the 3-time Stanley Cup winner is among his heroes.
“The greatest player, and now he is becoming a great coach,” Ovechkin told TASS in May. “I want him to continue. I don’t know what will happen next, maybe he will be the head coach of the Russian national team. I am happy for him and for the CSKA team.”
Ovechkin himself overtook Fedorov for the most goals by a Russian NHL player in passed him for the most goals scored by a Russian player in November of 2015 and for the most points (1,180) in February of 2019. Will it be Ovechkin overtaking Gretzky by the time his NHL career comes to a close?
