The Ottawa Senators managed to get the 5-4 overtime win over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night and they did so without forward Mikkel Boedker, who was a healthy scratch for the contest.
Hockey Beast took a closer look at the players out of the lineup for the surprising Sens and quickly came to the realization - thanks to a Reddit user - that Ottawa is paying $41,654,167 to players not in the lineup:
Bobby Ryan: $7.25m (NHLPA Player Assistance)
Ryan Callahan: $5.8m (LTIR)
Marian Gaborik: $4.875m (LTIR)
Craig Anderson: $4.75m (IR)
Clarke MacArthur: $4.65m (LTIR)
Nikita Zaitsev: $4.5m (IR)
Mikkel Boedker: $4m (Scratched)
Anders Nilsson: $2.6m (Day to day)
Dylan DeMelo: $900k (IR)
Christian Wolanin: $900k (Season opening IR)
Dion Phaneuf: $729k (Retained salary from the buyout)
Scott Sabourin: $700k (IR)
The bill will drop now that the Senators have announced that goalie Craig Anderson is ready to return to action, however, Anders Nilsson is expected to remain on the sidelines longer as he had just been diagnosed with a concussion.
It’s a good thing general manager Pierre Dorion made significant trades in the past (!) or else, we don’t know how the Senators could respect the cap ceiling. But you have to admit, this is insane.
