Saskatoon 60+ league rolls out the red carpet and fills the stands to celebrate 90 year old hockey players birthday

“The key to life is to keep busy! A lot of the guys I've played with would love to be out here still.”

Just more proof that prairie folk are a special kind of folk.

The Saskatoon 60+ hockey league literally rolled out the red carpet and filled the stands in celebration of Stan Halliwell's 90th birthday.

The winger helped establish the old-timers league for men aged 60 and above way back in 1993 and he's still out there at age 90 at least once a week. Halliwell credits the sport for his longevity and maintains that he has no plans to quite anytime soon.

"The key to life is to keep busy! I'm still riding my bike and keeping busy. I can't just sit around," Halliwell told Global News.

"He's in such good shape," says his wife Laurette Halliwell. 'My mobility isn't great, so he looks after me."

Fans filled the stands to celebrate Halliwell's 90th birthday and revealed a surprise for the living legend: They have named a building expansion in his honor. The Stan Halliwell Wing will feature new, state of the art dressing rooms.

"I'm very fortunate," Halliwell said. "A lot of guys I played with would love to be out there still, but things happen."

Kudos to Stan and to all the fine gentlemen of the Saskatoon 60+ hockey league. You're living the dream, boys. Keep living it as long as you can.
