On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins announced that forward Samuel Poulin was taking a leave of absence from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins due to personal reasons.
“The Penguins support Sam’s decision to take time away from hockey to focus on himself,” said Hextall. “As with all of our players, our priority is them as individuals first. We look forward to having him back with the team when he is ready.”
The team will have no further comment on his status at this time, and kindly asks that his privacy be respected.
Poulin is expected to return home to Quebec and continue his workouts on and off the ice. Earlier this season during training camp, it was reported that Poulin had taken a leave of absence from the team. It was mentioned that the young forward was excused for a couple of days after his grandfather had sadly passed away.
Three years ago, the 21-year-old forward was the Penguins’ first round pick at the NHL Draft. His scoring touch had convinced the team, though it’s been an uphill battle as soon as his NHL career kicked off.
He made his NHL debut back on October 25 against the Calgary Flames, and managed to record his first career point, an assist. However, he has just three games of NHL experience. Poulin opened the season in the American Hockey League, looking to prove he could crack the roster with the big club as time went on. In 85 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins over the past two seasons, where he’s notched 41 points.
A pause now appears to be necessary and life is bigger than hockey. Always.
