Rumor: Bruins move on quickly from Bergeron, are linked to top center in trade talks

In case you've been living under a rock for the past 24 hours, Boston Bruins captain and all around franchise legend Patrice Bergeron has announced his retirement. The 38 year old center made the announcement himself on the team's website and social media accounts.

While the NHL is busy celebrating Bergeron's Hall of Fame worthy career, the Bruins themselves aren't wasting any time in replacing Bergeron's spot in the lineup. It seems that the team is expecting fellow veteran David Krejci to retire this offseason as well, which makes Pavel Zacha the team's #1 center. While Zacha is a quality player, he's simply not a #1 calibre center on a Stanley Cup contending roster.

So.... what next?

Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele has featured in trade talks for weeks now and Jets insider Scott Billeck addresses the rumors that the Bruins have interest in the 30 year old Scheifele. But, hold the phone... Billeck wonders aloud if the Bruins have more interest in Calgary Flames center Elias Lindholm over Scheifele.

While moving on from Scheifele, who was attached at the hip with Wheeler for much of their time together in Winnipeg, still seems likely, it may have to wait as well. It’s possible Boston could enter the picture at some point. They likely have their eyes focused on what Elias Lindholm decides in Calgary first.

Either player would be an upgrade on Zacha but... let's get real... there's no replacing what Bergeron can bring. Having said that, Lindholm's game is a lot closer to Bergeron's game than Scheifele's is. Frankly, I think Scheifele would be a poor fit for the Bruins especially if they plan on playing him alongside Brad Marchand and/or David Pastrnak. While Scheifele is a talented player, he doesn't do really any of the dirty work the free the puck up for his linemates like Bergeron does. Lindholm though is a solid two-way player who is equally adept in the offensive zone and defensive zone. Think of him sort of like a B-Level Bergeron in the making. Thoughts, B's fans?
