Reporter who shared unconfirmed details of Johnny Gaudreau’s passing fired from job
While the tragic news was confirmed later on, the way he broke the news got him in trouble.
The tragic news was confirmed on Friday morning by the Columbus Blue Jackets and the NHL. Star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, 29-year-old Matthew Gaudreau, passed away in a tragic incident as they were both struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while riding their bikes in Salem County, New Jersey.
Unconfirmed reports emerged late last night and the man behind it, who first broke the news of Gaudreau and his brother’s passings has officially been fired from his job.
Late on Thursday night, Dylan Robillard of “Flyers Nitty Gritty” broke the news before any concrete proof was available to the public. He simply shared that Johnny Gaudreau and a family member were both involved in a vehicle crash while cycling in Salem County, New Jersey and had both died. He did not wait for additional and confirmed details and was subsequently let go by his employer, who made a statement on Friday via an official statement, saying that he was let go for what he did:
"As a publication, Flyers Nitty Gritty does not condone what transpired with the reporting of the unthinkable Johnny and Matt Gaudreau tragedies. Anyone affiliated who is affiliated with our brand had their own opinions and do not reflect our views, thoughts or opinions.
"After this unthinkable tragedy, we have parted ways with Dylan Robillard. It's what's best for both parties moving forward."
While what Robillard did is unacceptable and has been criticized by many other reporters and insiders around the NHL, he does not need to be dealing with death threats, which he has reportedly been getting since he wanted to be first to break the news on the brothers’ tragic passing.
The whole situation is already terribly horrid and devastating. Let’s not make it worse with death threats only because this “journalist” wanted to break the news.
More love, especially for the Gaudreau’s family at this difficult time.
