Current Detroit Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde hasn't exactly won over the fans of Hockeytown, and it appears that there could be the potential for him to not finish out his current contract.

With the Red Wings having played uninspired hockey in so many games down the stretch here, especially against inferior opponents like the Arizona Coyotes, Columbus Blue Jackets and Buffalo Sabres, calls for Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman to consider a coaching change have only grown louder. Could he be getting ready to pull the trigger on what would be a major move?

According to Detroit Hockey Now, Yzerman is reportedly very displeased with how his team has performed of late, and is considering jettisoning Lalonde in favor of a different bench boss. And the candidate that was listed is none other than Craig Berube, who led the St. Louis Blues to the Stanley Cup in 2019.

Ironically, the Blues fired Berube earlier this season after they lost to the Red Wings on home ice. Right now, he's a coaching free agent.

A short excerpt from the article:

"An NHL source is telling Hockey Now that the possibility of a coaching change is something that is being pondered by Detroit Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman. According to the source, Yzerman might be considering a change in his coach in the offseason were the Red Wings to continue their free fall out of a Stanley Cup playoff position. And if that is indeed the route he decides to take, the man at the top of the list of desirable candidates on Yzerman’s short list would be former St. Louis Blues coach Craig Berube.

"Another NHL source was telling Hockey Now that on Friday, Yzerman read the riot act to his coaching staff and players regarding their lackluster performance of late. They followed that up by blowing a third-period lead in a 3-2 shootout loss at Florida. Currently 0-2-2 on a season-high five-game road trip, Detroit completes the journey on Monday at Tampa Bay."

In addition to his time with the Blues, Berube has also served as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, with whom he had perviously worked as an assistant for several seasons. The 58-year-old has racked up a coaching record of 281-190-72. Before that, he had a 17 season NHL playing career that included stops with the Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Washington Capitals and New York Islanders.
