RIP TNA.

The NHL and the NHLPA have reportedly been in discussions to bring back the World Cup of Hockey in 2024, a tournament that has historically never really taken off.

There have been just three World Cups (1996, 2004 and 2016). The tournament was intended to be a replacement for the former Canada Cup which ran from 1976 until 1991. You may recall that Team Canada won the last tournament in 2016, triumphing over the hodge podge Team Europe which featured players from Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Slovakia, Slovenia and Swizterland.

You may also recall that the tournament also featured Team North America, which was a mix of Canadian and American players aged 23 and under. The team featured superstars like Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, Auston Matthews, Nathan MacKinnon and more. The team provided some of the most exciting moments of the entire tournament, including this absolute beauty by MacKinnon to secure a victory over Team Sweden:

Sick goal, sick team, sick uniforms and... sick name. I mean... TNA... tough to beat that in my books...

Unfortunately, it looks like Team North America will be a one time thing, as NHL insider Pierre LeBrun reports that the team will NOT be included in the 2024 World Cup format.

Honestly, as much as I might not like this, I totally get it. It's tough to have a proper best on best International tournament with silly made up teams. Ah well... we'll always have 2016, TNA...
