UPDATE 7: NHL insider Frank Seravalli is reporting that the 'best case scenario' for Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is that he missed just 3 weeks of action with a suspected ankle sprain injury.

Seravalli reported on the Daily Face-Off podcast that sources have indicated that McDavid's injury is similar to the one suffered by Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov. For the record, Barkov missed three weeks and eight games for the Panthers.

UPDATE 5: Edmonton Oilers veteran Ryan Nugent-Hopkins called out his teammates following captain Connor McDavid's injury last night.

Nugent-Hopkins' comments last night:

"Yeah, I mean of course. he's our leader, and also the best player in the game. Of course, you're going to feel it. We got to do a better job of stepping up when a guy like that goes down, though."

- Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

I've gotta say... he ain't wrong.

It's tough to see a guy like McDavid injured on the ice while tough guys like Darnell Nurse contribute almost nothing to this team's success.

UPDATE 4: McDavid ankle watch continues, courtesy of TSN expert Chris Johnston.

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid left last night's loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets after suffering what appeared to be an ankle injury.

Today, Johnston reported on TSN's 'Insider Trading' segment that the Oilers are assessing McDavid's injury with an "extreme amount of caution."

From Johnston today:

"Given who Connor McDavid is and where we are in the season I would expect an extreme amount of caution taken with his recovery. It wouldn't surprise me to see the layoff be long even if the injury itself isn't that serious because they want to error on the side of caution here."

Marshall reports this morning that McDavid has left the team and headed back to Edmonton where he'll meet with his own personal medical and training staff to devise a rehab plan.

There are further rumors that McDavid could have suffered a high ankle sprain on his left foot.
