Report: Leafs could still ditch Timothy Liljegren

Despite taking care of one important matter of offseason personnel business, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving could have an unusual trick up his sleeve.
Free-agent defenseman Timothy Liljegren was re-signed to a contract extension of two years with an AAV of $3 million - but could he still be on the move out of Toronto?
According to TSN's Chris Johnston, the possibility remains that Liljegren could still be dealt as the Leafs continue trying to keep "chipping away" at their current roster makeup.
“We’ll see if Timothy Liljegren maybe still gets traded. I know he was signed to a two-year extension but I don’t think you can entirely rule out a trade in his circumstance yet. They’re still going to keep chipping away at the roster,” Johnston said.
“They would look at moving Kampf, Jarnkrok, or Timothy Liljegren in the right deal,” Johnston said. “I should be very clear, that is not to say they are trying to get rid of them at all costs, but I think that because of the Leafs’ salary cap, they are pretty tight up against it.”
Right now, the Leafs have literally zero cap space remaining, and are actually in the hole to the tune of nearly $700K, according to Cap Friendly.
Liljegren was limited to 55 games in the 2023-24 regular season after missing an extended period of time thanks to suffering a high ankle sprain following a questionable hit from Boston Bruins captain Brad Marchand; he was also scratched during the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
