Report: Brendan Shanahan blocked Marc-Andre Fleury trade to Leafs

The fallout continues in Toronto over Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan terminating general manager Kyle Dubas after five seasons on the job and only a single playoff series victory during his tenure that included several successful regular season campaigns. 

And now, more details have emerged on a reported trade that would have brought veteran goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to the Leafs at the 2022 NHL Trade Deadline. As you may remember, Fleury had been unceremoniously dumped by the Vegas Golden Knights by being dealt to the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks for essentially nothing in return. He even mulled retiring before agreeing to join the Blackhawks and play out the season like a good solider. 

He would in fact be dealt at the '22 Deadline, but to the Minnesota Wild. So what exactly would the reported Fleury-to-Leafs deal have looked like? According to NHL insider Darren Dreger, the Blackhawks were ready to send Fleury and forward Brandon Hagel to Toronto in exchange for goaltender Petr Mrazek, draft pick Matthew Knies and two first-round pick. 

The Leafs would instead elect to roll with Jack Campbell in net for what would ultimately be yet another doomed Round 1 Stanley Cup Playoffs series, this time against the Tampa Bay Lightning who were the ones who acquired Hagel from Chicago.
