Report: Auston Matthews will not sign long term with Leafs

Uh oh......

What exactly does the future hold for Toronto Maple Leafs superstar forward Auston Matthews in the only NHL city that he's called home so far in his career?

WIth the departure of now-former general manager Kyle Dubas, there has been plenty of speculation that Matthews could soon be on his way out the door due to how close he was with the young executive. Or could he elect to re-sign with the Leafs, but for shorter term than what the fans would like to see?

The latter sounds like it could actually be a possibility, if this indication from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period is accurate. In his words, Matthews won't be signing a new deal with the Leafs any longer than five years.

If that prediction holds true and Matthews signs a new deal for only five years (or less), he'd be no older than 31 years of age and still in his prime when it came time for his newest deal.

Should he hit the open market next summer, he'll be one of the highest coveted free agent forwards in recent memory. Leafs fans, should new GM Brad Treliving take what he can get from Matthews, or should he hold firm and try to convince him to sign a longer term deal?
