The Detroit Red Wings made history in last month's NHL Draft when they selected Norwegian forward Michael Brandsegg-Nygård with the 15th overall selection, making him the first ever native of Norway to be taken in Round 1.

And now, his career with the organization has officially started. This evening, the Red Wings announced that Brandsegg-Nygård has signed a three-year entry level deal that carries an AAV just under $1 million:

Brandsegg-Nygård played for Mora in the HockeyAllsvensken, the second-highest league in the Swedish ice hockey system in 2023-24 and racked up eight goals and 10 assists. Shortly after the pick was made, Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman praised his two-way playing ability as well as his strength.

“Big, strong young man,” Yzerman said shortly after the selection. “Physically developed, can really shoot the puck. He’s a really good two-way player, a goal-scoring winger, who obviously fills a void in our prospect pool.”

“When he’s not scoring, he’ll still be an effective player,” Yzerman said. “I just think he’s a guy who can play in all situations. Probably play either wing, a lot of different spots on the power play as well.”

He was highly regarded by scouts as well, having entered the 2024 Draft ranked as the 6th overall European player available by NHL Central Scouting, 20th overall by TSN's Bob McKenzie, and 16th overall by Sportsnet.
