Quinn Hughes ejected for hit on Josh Norris on Saturday.
Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes has been ejected from the game for a hit on Josh Norris.
The Vancouver Canucks will have to play most of Saturday night's game against the Ottawa Senators without the services of their captain.
That's because during the first period of Saturday night's clash between the Canucks and Sens, Hughes found himself quickly ejected from the game after he delivered a questionable hit to the back of Senators forward Josh Norris. The hit was really more of a cross check and/or shove than any kind of meaningful body contact but it did catch Norris at an awkward time as he was skating around the back of the net and caused him to go face first into the end boards.
It was far from the most violent hit you're ever going to see in the NHL but it was enough to send Norris' face right into the edge of the boards and appeared to injure the Senators forward in the process. It looked as though Norris' mouth may have taken the brunt of the blow into the edge of the boards, and he has yet to return to the game as a result of this hit.
Update: Norris is back in the game.
Here is a look at the replay:
Again it doesn't look like much and there is already plenty of debate on social media right now about whether or not this truly warranted a game misconduct, but the play was called a major on the ice and reviewed by the league who made the decision to give Hughes the rest of the night off.
Did the NHL make the right call here or was a game misconduct too much? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
