Quinn Hughes could be pulled from 4 Nations as Canucks are “concerned about his safety and health”

On Tuesday, Vancouver Canucks captain and star defenseman Quinn Hughes was missing from the game against the Colorado Avalanche. He therefore missed a second straight game with what seems to be a lower-body injury sustained during his team’s 5-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Friday.

Hughes sat out the Canucks’ 3-2 overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday after taking the pre-game warmup at Rogers Arena and now fans have been awaiting the latest update for his status for Thursday’s contest against the Sharks in San Jose.

Head coach Rick Tocchet provided an update, and unfortunately, it isn’t what Canucks’ fans wanted to hear. Hughes is not travelling with the club and will miss a third straight game. When asked about the upcoming Four Nations tournament,

Tocchet even added that his participation could be in jeopardy for Team USA.

“It depends on the next 48 hours.

“We’ll sit down with Quinn and talk to him.

“Like every player, you’re concerned about safety and health.”

The reigning Norris Trophy winner as the NHL’s top defenseman, whose 59 points lead the Canucks by 25, is a key member of Team USA for the Four Nations tournament that starts next week. Team USA’s first game is on February 13 against Finland.

Losing Hughes would be a significant blow to the Americans, but also for Vancouver. The Canucks, ahead of Wednesday night’s action, are just out of the playoff picture with 59 points, right behind the Calgary Flames who currently hold the last Wild card spot in the Western conference. Vancouver needs Hughes and the choice might come down to preventing him from taking part in the Four Nations tournament.
