Last month, Nick Kypreos explained how he was certain that Winnipeg Jets forward Pierre-Luc Dubois will soon be wearing the uniform of the Montreal Canadiens.
It sounds like Kypreos might have been on to something. The Jets might be in great position for a playoff run this season, there is a sense, especially when the forward came back to Montreal in January to announce that he was relaunching his takeover of Vincent Lecavalier’s charity, which helped fund hockey for underprivileged kids. The taking over of the foundation reignited rumours about his future in Montreal.
Kypreos isn’t the only one now who believes Dubois wants to join the Canadiens shortly. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on a recent 32 Thoughts podcast that Dubois was leaning more and more to signing with the Canadiens, he who is scheduled to become a pending restricted free agent on July 1 with arbitration rights.
The chatter on Dubois has been quiet because of the Jets’ success in 2022-23. Winnipeg currently sits in second place of the Central division and is getting ready for a long playoff run. However, the Jets’ success is said to have little impact on Dubois or his desire to stay in Winnipeg, and the move to Montreal is becoming more and more obvious.
It’s well-known that the Canadiens tried to acquire Dubois when he was in Columbus and had asked to be traded in January of 2021. The former Blue Jackets third-overall pick eventually went to the Jets in return for Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic.
His agent Pat Brisson added to the mix in the first weeks of the current season when he commented his client’s contract saying Dubois wouldn’t sign beyond two years in Winnipeg and that Montreal is “a city he would like to play in”.
While Dubois won’t comment now on his next contract, there will be little surprise when he signs in Montreal.
