The Toronto Maple Leafs shocked fans on Friday, announcing the team had decided to part ways with general manager Kyle Dubas , whose contract was about to expire with the organization. In a press conference held by team president Brendan Shanahan, it was revealed that a new contract was prepared, but things changed after Dubas’s media conference on Monday. Shanahan then considered that Dubas might no longer want to continue on with the team. Shanahan therefore decided, also facing a gap in contract talks with Dubas, that it was best to part ways.

After the Leafs’ press conference, insider Pierre LeBrun reached out to Dubas to get his reaction to the tumultuous day. Once he got in touch with the former GM, LeBrun reported that “Dubas respectfully declined to comment.”

“There will be a time and a place for that,” he said.

The major changes in Toronto have considerably angered some members of the franchise. LeBrun also reported that Jason Spezza, who joined his former team as special assistant to GM Dubas back in May, 2022, had “tendered his resignation from the Leafs prior to Brendan Shanahan’s news conference today.”

It is completely understandable that it was too soon for Dubas to react to the announcement, though we can easily imagine with his short comment how he still needs time to digest the news.
