I bet Boston Bruins goalie Linus Ullmark is sick of the chatter. While Trade Deadline Day has come and gone, one rumour has been sticking around. At the start of the month, the Bruins reportedly came awfully close to trading Ullmark, with rumors suggesting that the only reason the deal failed to go through was due to goalie using his trade protection to block the deal to the Los Angeles Kings.
When the trade offer was made to the Bruins who had to speak to Ullmark about it, since he holds a 16 team no-trade list in his contract, it is believed that the netminder reached out to his former captain Patrice Bergeron.
Bergeron spoke to Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic and revealed how distraught Ullmark was when the trade rumour came rushing into Boston. The former captain revealed how he attempted to provide support and advice to the goaltender:
“With Linus, for me, it was just to show support in a way. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for him and his family. He’s got kids enrolled in school. I’m sure his head was spinning. If it was going to happen, it’s like, “OK, what do I do? My kids are in school. My wife is here.” Then you start thinking too much. Sometimes, it’s not even what you say. It’s more just to be there to listen and for him to open up and talk about it. I don’t think I said anything crazy. It was more just to have a conversation and open up.”
While speaking with Ullmark (Bergeron also had a conversation with forward Jake DeBrusk who was also involved in trade chatter), the Bruins former superstar realized how much he missed the company of his former teammates. He however added that he keeps rooting for them and finds ways to hang out with his closest friends whenever he can.
This is part of what made Bergeron a great teammate and captain, and probably why Ullmark reached out to him amidst the craziness of the trade deadline.
