A controversial figure on the ice, P.K. Subban never shies away from commitment towards his community off of it. Once again, the Montreal Canadiens superstar showed that he really cares, making the biggest donation by a Canadian athlete, ever.
#76 made a commitment to give and raise $10M to the Montreal's children hospital over the next seven years. Making a very impressive speach in french, the city's first language, Subban said it was his turn to make a longterm commitment toward the city of Montreal, a year after the Canadiens made the same gesture toward him when they granted him an eight-year contract.
"Last year Montreal made a long-term commitment toward me. Now it's my turn to make an engagement to Montreal," said Subban in a press conference.
His inspiration? None other than the Montreal Canadiens all-time great Jean Béliveau.
"I idolize Jean Beliveau. I want to walk in his footsteps," said Subban, telling his widow Elise that he hopes his acts would make her husband proud. I am proud to walk in the footsteps of my idol Jean Beliveau by giving back to the community and feel privileged to be able to help transform the lives of sick children and their families", continued Subban.
Bad mouth have since commented over the Internet that this looks like an effort by Subban to secure the team's captain role. For once, people around should probably simply raise their hat to the defenseman for such a great act instead of questioning the timing of the donation.
