Ovechkin ties Marleau, closes in on record owned by Jagr.
Alex Ovechkin has tied Patrick Marleau and is closing in on a record owned by NHL legend Jaromir Jagr.
The record chase for Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin continued on Sunday and not only did Ovechkin close in on the record everyone will be watching closely all season, Wayne Gretzky's 894 career goals in the National Hockey League, but he also closed in on a record held by another NHL legend.
Ovechkin would record his 864th career goal on Sunday night, bringing him within 30 goals of The Great One himself. Here is a look at the replay:
That goal was also unique in its own way as it was the first time that Ovechkin successfully recorded a goal against Golden Knights netminder Ilya Samsonov, and it was that fact that moved him up in the record books. Samsonov becomes the 177th NHL goaltender that Ovechkin has scored on throughout his career and that was good enough to tie him for second on the all time list with former NHL player Patrick Marleau. That is to say, Ovechkin has scored on more unique goaltenders than any other player in NHL history with one exception.
NHL legend Jaromir Jagr currently holds the record but Ovechkin is extremely close to tying Jagr on that all-time list, needing only one more unique goaltender to catch Jagr. Jagr scored on 178 unique NHL goaltenders throughout his lengthy NHL career and it seems likely that Ovechkin will tie that mark at some point.
If The Great 8 manages to score on 2 more unique NHL goaltenders he would hold sole possession of that record, and I must admit it would be a pretty incredible feat to break a pair of records owned by Wayne Gretzky and Jaromir Jagr respectively in a single season.
