All five players allegedly involved in a sexual assault scandal that occurred during a Hockey Canada event in London in June 2018 have all surrendered to the local police. Four National Hockey League players – Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube and Cal Foote – surrendered on Tuesday, while former Ottawa Senators Alex Formenton, who currently plays in Switzerland, reported to police on Jan. 28. On Monday morning, the London Police will hold a press conference to update the public on the investigation.
The hockey world was turned upside down last week with the announcement from London Police that five members of Hockey Canada’s 2018 World Juniors gold medal winning team had been ordered to surrender themselves within the next two weeks. Subsequently Calgary Flames forward Dillon Dube, Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Carter Hart, New Jersey Devils defenseman Cal Foote and forward Michael McLeod, all members of that 2018 version of Team Canada, all took indefinite leave from their NHL teams. Additionally, former NHL forward Alex Formenton, who was playing pro hockey in Switzerland, took leave from his team and returned to Canada.
However, it is believed that more players from the 2018 WJC Team Canada roster will be asked to come to court. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman explained how other players from that junior roster, some of whom are currently playing in the NHL, could be called to the stand as important witnesses in this case.
Let's not forget that when the report first came out, eight players were said to be involved in the alleged incident.
TSN’s brilliant Rick Westhead reports for his part that, according to his legal sources, that it’s clear the alleged victim - referred to as E.M. in court documents - is committed to cooperating with police, testifying in open court, and facing cross-examinations from multiple highly-skilled defence lawyers.
My heart goes out to her. On top of that, it will not be solved quickly as Westhead also pointed out that “lawyers who specialize in criminal sexual assault cases have told me a trial in this case is unlikely before 2026.”
Players allegedly involved and charged in this incident have made some statements about their innocence. More will be revealed during Monday’s press conference by the London police and what is expected to come next.
