One stunning contender enters Mitch Marner trade talks!
This would be a jaw-dropper!
A new destination has emerged in trade rumours surrounding forward Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and it sounds like this specific team wants to have it all.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Vegas Golden Knights are always around any good player in the trade market and it’s not any different with Marner. The insider explained how he’s had people suggesting trade offers for Marner involving defenseman Shea Theodore and even goalie Logan Thompson.
“One of the things with Marner is that a lot of people suspect that Vegas will be around it,” Friedman said on the Leafs Morning Take podcast. “Because Vegas is just smart, they are around any good player. So I got people hypothesizing Shea Theodore and Logan Thompson deals to me, for example.”
In Vegas, tough choices will have to be made especially now that Theodore looks expandable with the contract extension offered to Noah Hanifin. As for Thompson, the Golden Knights appear to be set on making Adin Hill the starter, which could land Thompson on the trade block.
Toronto is focused on getting a top player on its blue line and Thompson surely fits the bill. The idea of also getting Thompson to pair up with Joseph Woll is quite enticing for the Maple Leafs, who could look into that trade possibility.
It has been reported that the Maple Leafs and general manager Brad Treliving are willing to listen to offers on Marner, who carries an AAV of $10.9 million and a full no-movement clause, meaning Toronto cannot trade or waive him without his permission.
In Vegas, it would be hard to fit Marner under the cap, even though it rising by $4.5 million for next season.
Many trade rumours are discussed, but when it comes to Marner, he continues to train and prepare to return with the Leafs for the final season of his contract. He has spent his entire NHL career with the Maple Leafs, posted 26 goals and 59 assists for a total of 85 points in 69 games in the 2023-24 season. He could very well finish his current deal in Toronto, but maybe not his NHL career.
