Oilers drop a brutal game to the Sharks, are now tied for last place in the NHL

The Edmonton Oilers are now tied with the hopeless San Jose Sharks in the basement of the NHL's standings with a 2-9-1 record through their first 12 games of the season.

A team that was picked by dozens of analysts and thousands of fans to contend for the Stanley Cup this season can't even muster up enough of an effort to beat a glorified AHL squad in San Jose.

YIKES.

The visiting Oilers lost 3-2 in San Jose this evening and, frankly, they didn't even look like they cared much for the result until their backs were up against the wall. Sure, they outshot and out-chanced the Sharks, but that's hardly a feat this season. The fact of the matter is that the Oilers didn't bear down when they needed to and their on-ice mistakes compounded as the game wore on. In fact, the game played out almost EXACTLY how every game has so far this season. Superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl push the offence in the early part of the game, but every mistake seems to end up behind their netminder. From there, they're behind the 8-ball all evening and can't muster the effort required for a comeback. Wash, rinse, repeat.

After dropping a particularly brutal game to the Vancouver Canucks on Monday evening, GM Ken Holland decided to shake up his roster by placing $25 million goaltender Jack Campbell on waivers. Well, guess what? Campbell cleared waivers and was assigned to the AHL, where he still absolutely stinks. Campbell allowed 4 goals on 20 shots this evening against the Abbotsford Canucks, with this goal being arguably the worst he's let in all season:

Meanwhile, Stuart Skinner continues his mediocre play with the Oilers and it doesn't appear that the cavalry is coming. Sure, Holland recalled veteran Calvin Pickard but no one is going to mistake him for Ken Dryden anytime soon. The fact of the matter is that Holland has made his bed and now all of Oil Country is forced to lie in it with him.

At this point you have to imagine it's only a matter of time until head coach Jay Woodcroft is given his walking papers. Stay tuned.
