NHL Player Safety comes down on two Panthers' players after last night's game
A double ruling against the defending Cup champions.
UPDATE: NHL Player Safety has fined defenseman Florida Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola $5,000 for boarding Tampa Bay Lightning forward Zemgus Girgensons.
Read below for our earlier report on Mikkola's teammate Aaron Ekblad and his appointment with NHL Player Safety.
This just in, NHL Player Safety has scheduled a hearing with Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad following his illegal check to the head of Tampa Bay Lightning forward Brandon Hagel last night.
And here is the hit in question:
Hagel did not return to action.
Ekblad, of course, recently served a massive 20 game suspension for using banned performance enhancing drugs. Obviously his previous suspension had nothing to do with the nature of last night's incident, but it's worth noting that NHL Player Safety does take prior infractions into account when determining penalties.
