NHL Player Safety comes down on Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson.

Tom Wilson and Josh Anderson in trouble over last night's bench filling brawl.

The National Hockey League has seen plenty of bench clearing brawls over the course of its history but bench filling brawls are something a little more rare.

On Friday, the Washington Capitals and Montreal Canadiens clashed in Game 3 of their opening round Stanley Cup playoff series and it would be during the course of that game that a conflict between Capitals forward Tom Wilson and Canadiens forward Josh Anderson would lead to a ton of chaos on the ice.

Anderson and Wilson confronted one another on the ice and began to trade barbs before things would eventually go from verbal to physical. It was at that moment that chaos erupted at the Bell Centre with Wilson and Anderson fighting their way onto the bench as the officials on the ice desperately tried to maintain control of the game.

Here is a look at the entire chaotic scene as it unfolded:

And again from another angle:

Well unsurprisingly this level of chaos has led to action on the part of the NHL's Department of Player Safety, although I must admit these are some very mild slaps on the wrist for an altercation that thankfully resulted in no injuries.

The disciplinary arm of the league has announced that both Wilson and Anderson will receive identical punishments, with NHL Player Safety announcing today that both men would receive a fine in the amount of $5,000. That is of course the maximum fine that can be issued under the current rules of the collective bargaining agreement, but it will be a drop in the bucket for these men especially with emotions riding so high during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
