NHL Player Safety takes action on Sunday.
The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety has been kept pretty busy in these 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, and on Sunday the league's disciplinary arm announced that 2 more players would face additional discipline following their actions over the weekend.
The first announcement came in regards to the first round series being contested between the Washington Capitals and the Florida Panthers. The NHL's Department of Player Safety has announced that veteran Capitals forward Evgeny Kuznetsov will face a $5,000 fine, the maximum allowable amount under the rules of the collective bargaining agreement, for a high stick that he delivered to Florida Panthers forward Noel Acciari.
Dallas Stars captain Jamie Benn would also face a fine on Sunday and like Kuznetsov before him he was also hit with the maximum penalty of $5,000. I suppose it makes sense that both men received a similar fine given that the NHL has punished them under the exact same rule for the exact same infraction, with Benn getting slapped on the wrist for high sticking Calgary Flames forward Andrew Mangiapane.
Of course neither player will miss any game time as a result of these punishments, but it is worth noting that should they land in any more trouble during these playoffs they will be considered repeat offenders as a result of these fines.
