In case you missed it earlier today, the NHL released an official update on the paused 2019-20 season based on questions that they league has received from fans. The update was released in the form of a “Q&A”.
To check out the full update, read our article published earlier today.
One particular statement released by the league though is piquing the interest of hockey fans across the world and it has to do with the potential re-opening of the NHL season as early as early May.
Check it out:
**On March 15, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended against gatherings with 50 people-or-more for a period of eight weeks. How does that impact the NHL’s timeline on determining when the season can resume?**
We will continue to monitor developments during the 60-day window prescribed by the CDC. Assuming events are tracking positively, we would hope to be able to begin providing high-level guidance on the potential of opening a Club training camp period roughly 45 days into the period covered by the CDC’s recommendation.
Doing the math on that it sounds like the NHL is hoping to opening a modified training camp for teams beginning April 29th. That assumes, of course, that “events are tracking positively.” We also have to assume that these modified training camps will be as short as possible and that the league will resume play in early May. From there it’ll be a sprint to get the balance of the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs finished by the opening of the official offseason in July and August.
Stay tuned, hockey fans. We are very likely looking at AT LEAST another month of no NHL hockey and that’s a best case scenario.
