In an effort to avoid controversy, the National Hockey League has created a new one.

The league made the move to ban the celebration of theme nights in the league when they removed the player's ability to display their support on their gear or uniforms after several Pride Night's in the NHL caused quite a bit of controversy. Now however the unintended consequences of those bans are making headlines.

On Friday night, Max Miller of The Hockey News reported that Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson was barred from showing his support for Hockey Fights Cancer, during what is Hockey Fights Cancer month no less, because of the NHL's blanket ban on such displays. According to Miller, Thompson had tried to put a cancer ribbon on his helmet but was blocked from doing so on Friday night.

This is even more controversial when you consider the fact that the league and the National Hockey League Players Association both continue to show their support of Hockey Fights Cancer on the league's official website.

No doubt the NHL will be hearing plenty of backlash over the weekend regarding their stance on this issue, although whether or not that will lead to meaningful change remains to be seen.
