A day after it was announced that former Pittsburgh Penguins player Konstantin Koltsov tragically passed away from an apparent suicide, Women’s Tennis Association star Aryna Sabalenka broke her silence about his passing.

When the Belarusian tennis star posted her message on social media, fans had thought she was still dating Koltsov, who took his own life by jumping off a balcony of the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort. However, her statement revealed that they were no longer together at the time of his passing.

“Konstantin’s death is an unthinkable tragedy, and while we were no longer together, my heart is broken,” Sabalenka wrote in an Instagram story . “Please respect my privacy and his family’s privacy during this difficult time.”

This has been quite the news around the NHL and details were slowly coming in as it was first reported by Belarusian media that Koltsov’s death was due to a “detached blood clot.” However, the Miami-Dade Police Department later announced on Tuesday that this was being investigated as a suicide, and no foul play is suspected.

Koltsov was selected 18th overall by the Penguins in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and would later play three seasons for the franchise from 2002 to 2006.

He also represented his country on the international stage, suiting up for the Belarusian national team at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics and at nine World Championships.

Ultimately, he appeared in a total of 144 NHL games, scoring 12 goals with 26 assists. He also played several seasons in the KHL, scoring 43 goals with 73 assists in 375 games.
