Mike Sullivan goes off after ugly loss to Rangers.
The head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins was not happy after losing to the Rangers on Friday.
The head coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins was feeling pretty frustrated after an ugly loss to the New York Rangers on Friday night and he made no effort to hide that fact during his post game comments.
There was no doubt that Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan was throwing his players under the bus following the conclusion of the game with Sullivan calling out his team for one of their worst performances in quite some time.
"Probably the worst game we've played in a month maybe," said a frustrated Sullivan.
Sullivan also explicitly called his players out for ignoring the message, or messages, that had been delivered prior to the start of the game.
"Everything we talked about before the game we did the complete opposite," admitted Sullivan. "We talked about managing the puck, we gave up six 2 on 1s and a breakaway, we talked about bringing physicality to the game and we didn't touch anybody."
Sullivan was visibly frustrated while fielding questions about the loss.
"It's hard to win when you do things like that" said Sullivan.
The Penguins came into this one on a 4 game winning streak which made their performance all that much more surprising, when asked what he felt may have contributed to such a poor effort from his team Sullivan appeared to be at a loss.
"I don't have an answer for you," said Sullivan shaking his head.
Perhaps most damning of all however was Sullivan questioning the effort level of his own players.
"There wasn't a collective effort," said Sullivan with disgust written all over his face.
The Penguins will need to quickly resolve whatever issues led to this ugly performance as they will play again this evening against a tough opponent in the form of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
