Matthew Tkachuk taunts fans in Toronto after Game 5.
Matthew Tkachuk went out of his way to taunt fans in Toronto after eliminating the Maple Leafs in Game 5 on Friday night.
Florida Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk has quickly built up a reputation as a high-impact player on the ice, one that can potentially influence a playoff series, but he can also be a high-impact type of player when you put a microphone in front of his face.
That is exactly what several media outlets did after Tkachuk and the Panthers eliminated the Toronto Maple Leafs in 5 games on Friday night, and once again Tkachuk did not disappoint. The Florida Panthers agitator continued to stir the pot, something he has become known for, when he called out a particular chant from fans of the Maple Leafs.
That chant was of course the now infamous "We want Florida" chant uttered by Leafs fans back at the end of April.
Tkachuk was quick to point out immediately after the game, while standing on the bench in the Maple Leafs' home arena, that he was no longer hearing that chant.
"We don't hear many 'We want Floridas' at this moment right now and god does that feel good," said a brash Tkachuk after the game. "To do it in this building... oh god! That's a big one."
You might be tempted to believe that this was merely a heat of the moment utterance from Tkachuk, but make no mistake about it he intended to drive the dagger into the heart of Leafs nation. Tkachuk would again repeat his comments when interviewed outside the locker room following the game.
"I don't think they want Florida that much anymore," said Tkachuk in yet another interview. "I wasn't hearing many of those after that game and that might be the best part."
Tkachuk is working hard to make himself public enemy number one in Toronto, and unfortunately for the Maple Leafs, and their fans, they will be forced to wait until next season for their chance at revenge.
