The Toronto Maple Leafs liked what thye saw from Matthew Knies, who provided an instant impact upon his insertion into the lineup for Game 2 of what would be their eventually successful Round 1 Stanley Cup Playoffs series against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
However, Toronto's luck has turned backwards against the other National Hockey League team in the Sunshine State, as the Florida Panthers would eventually eliminate them in five games. What's worse, Knies was absent stating from midway through Game 2 after a controversial incident with Panthers forward Sam Bennett, who drove him into the boards and then tackled him to the ice. He didn't return to the series.
Knies, who stayed with captain John Tavares following his call up and also trains with fellow Arizona native Auston Matthews, talked about where he'll fit in the lineup on next year's team.
"It's tough to say where I'm going to fit in," he said. "Obviously, I want to play with their best players but I just have to play my game and it's going to work out. Use my size to my advantage. I just want to fit in well with their systems and getting more comfortable with their practices. Those little things I haven't gotten too familiar with yet," said Knies when asked about where he sees himself fitting into the Leafs' lineup."
