Matthew Knies “embarrasses” Mike Sullivan and the Penguins.
Matthew Knies gets the better of the Penguins with no time left on the game clock.
It isn't all that often that you see signs of visible frustration from Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan, but there was no question that he wasn't the least bit pleased as he headed back into the locker room after the second period of Sunday's game between his Penguins and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Sullivan practically ran off the bench at the end of the second period after his team allowed Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies to score a pretty incredible goal in the final moments of the game's second period. The Penguins had just given up a breakaway goal to Maple Leafs forward John Tavares when Knies created a turnover at the blue line with seconds left on the clock, raced into the Penguins zoned and fired off a shot in the knick of time to make the puck cross the goal line with a mere 0.1 seconds left on the game clock.
It was a complete breakdown by the Penguins to finish the second period, a breakdown that at least one form National Hockey League player felt was embarrassing.
"Look at how mad the coach is there," said former NHLer Jeff O'Neill. "Matthew Knies embarrassed the Pittsburgh Penguins, coaches, everybody."
O'Neill wasn't done there however, he would double down on his comments.
"You saw Sullivan? That's amateur hour stuff man," said O'Neill. "To give up that goal with your best players on the ice, that's crazy stuff."
It needs to be said that, while the Penguins gave up two bad goals late in the second period to cough up the lead, Knies himself deserves a ton of credit for having the awareness to race down the ice and get the shot off in time to make that a good goal.
Should the Penguins and their coaches feel embarrassed? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
