Mark Scheifele questions his future in Winnipeg.

Strong words from Scheifele.

The Winnipeg Jets saw their season mercifully come to an end on Sunday after they played their final game of the regular season against the Seattle Kraken, a 4-3 victory that was secured thanks to a huge comeback in the third period, one in which the Jets outscored the Kraken 3-0.

It was a nice win for the Jets but if there were any feel good vibes coming off of this victory they were quickly snuffed out thanks to the post game comments made by long time Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele. The 29 year old centerman is clearly not happy with how things have played out this season in Winnipeg and he made that known in his post game press conference. Scheifele openly questioned the direction of the team and added that he would be having some difficult conversations in the coming weeks and days about what shape his future will take.

"I just have to know, I just have to understand where this team is going," said a frustrated Scheifele on Sunday. "I'm in the prime of my career. I still have so much to improve on too and I like where my game is at. I like the physical nature that my body is at. I'm only improving, I'm only getting better and I'm only going to be a better player next year than I was this year. I just have to know where this team is going and what the direction is and what the changes are going to bem if any. I have to think about my career and what's going to be best for me. Those are going to be... talks with my agents and everyone in my family and stuff like that and figure out what I really want. So, it will be a tough talk tomorrow."

That "tough talk" that Scheifele is referring to here is his upcoming exit interview with Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff. I may be reading too much into Scheifele's comments here, but it sounds like if he doesn't like where the team is headed he might prefer to play elsewhere for the first time in his National Hockey League career. When you consider the fact that Scheifele has been with the Jets since being drafted by the organization in the first round (7th overall) of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, that would speak volumes.

As if the comments from Scheifele weren't enough on their own, interim Jets head coach Dave Lowry also chimed in on the matter following today's game. Lowry informed the media that Scheifele had an important decision ahead of him,  perhaps a sign that the organization is already well aware of how Scheifele feels about his current situation with the Jets.

Scheifele is coming off a productive season, scoring 29 goals and adding 41 assists for 70 points in 67 games, so if there is indeed a trade on the horizon the Jets will likely get significant value back for Scheifele who has 2 more seasons remaining on his current deal at a cap hit of $6.125 million per season.
