Mark Giordano is hoping to secure himself another NHL contract and return for one more year.

It appears as though veteran National Hockey League defenseman Mark Giordano has no plans to retire just yet, with the 41 year old blue liner reportedly talking to multiple NHL teams about one more year in the league.

The news comes directly from Giordano's agent, Ritch Winter, who was a recent guest of the Flames Talk podcast and it was during that appearance that he discussed his client's future.

"We are talking to a lot of teams, confirmed Winter on the podcast. "We've talked to Edmonton and Toronto."

It sounds like Giordano and his agent may have held discussions with the Calgary Flames as well, but by the sounds of things those discussions did not last very long and led nowhere.

"It wasn't something that we really pushed hard and it didn't seem like Craig Conroy had much interest in it, I think he missed the mark and I would tell him that if he was on the phone with us," added Winter.

It sounds like even if Giordano were to join a team like the Flames, it would be with the goal of being traded to a Stanley Cup contending team before the NHL trade deadline.

"He's looking to win," admitted Winter. "Even Gio doesn't think he has 10 years left, so you want to try and win."

Unsurprisingly that means that Giordano would prefer to wait for an opportunity with a contending team right out of the gate.

"Gio is holding firm until he finds an opportunity that gives him a high probability of being in that Stanley Cup Final," said Winter.

That being said it sounds like there are non-contending teams in the mix, including the Buffalo Sabres.

"In Buffalo, who we are talking to, they are a little worried that with his pedigree will he be happy with the ice time, will he be happy if he is a part-time player? So there's a lot of those kind of discussions going on and ultimately Gio has to make a decision as to what will help him accomplish his goals."

It seems likely that Giordano will have to play a significantly diminished role regardless of where he signs, and that is of course assuming that one of the team's he is currently in talks with decides to give him one more year in the NHL.
