Marcus Foligno and the Minnesota Wild left stunned after NHL officials rob them of a goal.
The Minnesota Wild have not exactly been happy with the National Hockey League's officials as of late, and unfortunately I don't think a controversial situation that occurred on Friday is going to help matters in that regard.
On Friday afternoon, the Wild faced off against Central Division rivals the Chicago Blackhawks and, after giving up an early lead in the first period, the Wild came storming back with 3 second period goals to take a commanding lead they would never relent. In spite of that there was still some major controversy at the end of this one after a blown call by the NHL officials on the ice.
After winning a faceoff deep in their own zone it appeared as though Wild veteran forward Marcus Foligno was set to put the game on ice after he had a clear path to both the puck and an empty net at the other end of the ice. For some bizarre reason however, officials on the ice felt this was the correct time to blow the game dead under the 'icing' rule.
The result of the play under the icing rule would have been the Wild and Foligno being denied a goal, the Wild being unable to change their players on the ice, and the game remaining within striking distance for the Blackhawks who would receive an offensive zone faceoff.
Things would only get more bizarre from there after the officials appeared to realize they had made a terrible call, with the face off coming back to the neutral zone instead of an offensive zone faceoff for the Blackhawks. Making matters even more bizarre was the fact that the Wild players were allowed to make a change, leaving the players on both benches and both coaches looking very confused.
It was one of the most bizarre scenarios I've seen play out all season and unfortunately it is going to be one that once again results in the Wild believing they do not get a fair shake from NHL officials on the ice.
