Maple Leafs target 2 coveted forwards in free agency.

The Toronto Maple Leafs don't have a great deal of salary cap space to work with this summer, but in spite of that it sounds like Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is looking at the possibility of making some big moves.

According to a report from The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta, the Maple Leafs currently remain "in the mix" for forwards Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi. Both men are believed to have a host of options in free agency with other teams having rumored interest as well, which means this would likely be a relatively costly piece of business for the Leafs.

That would appear to be especially true in the case of Bertuzzi who, according to Pagnotta, is seeking a long term contract extension moving forward.

Domi spent most of last season with the Chicago Blackhawks but was traded to the Dallas Stars at the deadline. He had a strong run with the Stars in the playoffs, picking up 3 goals and 10 assists for 13 points in just 19 playoff games. Domi had a fairly sizeable cap hit of $5.3 million last season and it remains to be seen how much he is hoping to earn on his next deal.

Bertuzzi is arguably the most sought after forward remaining on the market after a very strong showing with the Boston Bruins following a mid-season trade by the Red Wings. In spite of the fact that the Bruins were eliminated in the opening round, Bertuzzi shined with 5 goals and 5 assists over just 7 playoff games.  Bertuzzi was on a cap hit of $4.75 million last season and is almost certainly seeking a bump up from that number, and on a long term deal no less.

The next question of course becomes how do the Maple Leafs intend to free up the cap space they need to make these moves? At the National Hockey League Entry Draft we heard that William Nylander and the Maple Leafs were far apart on contract talks, with Nylander submitting his 10 team no trade list, and you have to wonder if that might make him the catalyst here.
