The Toronto Maple Leafs have been among the busiest National Hockey League teams ahead of Friday's Trade Deadline. In case you haven't been all caught up to speed, here is a quick recap of the moves they've made (so far).
- They acquired now former St. Louis Blues captain Ryan O'Reilly as well as forward Noel Acciari; in exchange, the Leafs sent prospect Mikhail Abramov, forward Adam Gaudette, the Leafs' 2023 first-round pick, the Ottawa Senators' 2023 third-round pick and Toronto's 2024 second-round pick to the Blues in return.
- They acquired defenseman Jake McCabe, forward Sam Lafferty, and a conditional fifth-round draft choice in both 2024 and 2025 from the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for draft picks.
- They acquired defenseman Luke Schenn from the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for a draft pick
- They acquired defenseman Erik Gustaffson and a 2023 1st round draft pick from the Washington Capitals in exchange for Rasmus Sandin
Whew, that's quite the flurry of moves, and we haven't even reached Friday yet! So, what do current Leafs personnel have to say about the moves that have been made by GM Kyle Dubas?
Said head coach Sheldon Keefe: "I think every guy we’ve brought in is a guy that we’ve got great confidence (in) that when the temperature rises they’re gonna continue to push and continue to play and continue to be themselves. And that’s what you want to have as a team....I don’t think there’s any doubt that we’ve improved in our depth and our competitiveness at both forward and defence."
Said forward Auston Matthews: "It’s a bit of a whirlwind, obviously. Just a lot of moving parts right now. So, you just want to kind of take a breath and see what’s going on. I still don’t know everything, like all the details and stuff, because I feel like it just happened like 20 minutes ago."
