Young forward Matthew Knies was trending on Twitter all through Tuesday night in a way that got the Toronto Maple Leafs’ fan base on edge. After acquiring netminder Cal Peterson as part of their significant return Tuesday in a three-team trade, talks have emerged out of Philadelphia that the Flyers are engaged in discussions around goalie Carter Hart, listening to propositions from around the league. The Flyers appear to be ready to part ways with Hart is scheduled for restricted free agency next summer. The 24-year-old goaltender is going into the last of a three-year, $11.937 million deal and has a cap hit of $3.979 million for the 2023-24 season.
Amongst the speculations, Knies’ name was brought up out of Toronto, which got Maple Leafs’ fans worried about new GM Brad Treliving looking into the issue in between the pipes. Reporter Dylan Robillard of Flyersnation suggested that the Leafs could land Hart in a trade sending back “No. 28 draft pick this year and Matthew Knies, a very solid young LW prospect who are NHL ready, as the Flyers need LW help” to Philly.
While there is no doubt that the return for Hart would be significant, it sounds far-fetched that the Maple Leafs would include Knies as part of the monster deal. The young forward played himself into a full time roster spot and it almost looks like he could be an untouchable in Toronto.
However with Treliving now in reigns and looking to fix the issues of goaltending and defense in Toronto, I guess nothing can be ruled out at this point…
