Tuesday was a busy day for the Toronto Maple Leafs. General manager Kyle Dubas traded away Pierre Engvall, and Rasmus Sandin while acquiring Erik Gustafsson and Luke Schenn in separate deals with a total of six new players coming to Toronto over the past 11 days.

And according to Chris Johnston, the Maple Leafs and GM Dubas still might not be done making moves ahead of Friday’s deadline. This is how Johnston explained it on last night’s Insider Trading on TSN:

“It is absolutely still possible there is more. And what I’ll tell you is after the series of moves they’ve made now, the cap picture is set. They have the ability to add Matt Murray back from long-term injured reserve. They have space to sign Matthew Knies when his NCAA season is done so they don’t have to make that move. But what they did in the trade with Washington for Rasmus Sandin is get another first-round pick. That’s potential ammo. And what we’ve seen around the league is just a tremendous amount of upheaval. A lot of things shaking out and I think the Leafs are going to approach these next couple days still looking for ways to improve. I don’t think they’re done.”

Per Cap Friendly, the Maple Leafs have a projected $4.77 million of deadline cap space with is enough to activate goalie Matt Murray off injured reserve and send Joseph Woll back to the AHL.

On top of that fancy first-round pick they got from the Capitals, Toronto currently has nine defensemen on its pro roster, so another move could be to trade someone from that group.

The Maple Leafs re the most active team in the buildup to the 2023 trade deadline and it might not be over as Johnston put it.
