The extended Toronto Maple Leafs family as well as the entire hockey community lost a legendary player and one of the game's pioneers late last year with the passing of legendary Swedish defenseman Börje Salming due to complications from ALS. Salming, who played 16 of his 21 National Hockey League seasons with the Leafs, had his number retired by the club in 2016.

And as a way to honor his memory, the NHL, National Hockey League Players’ Association and NHL Alumni Association announced today a joint donation of $100,000 to the Börje Salming ALS Foundation:

The Foundation promotes "medical scientific research to increase understanding and improve treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The foundation also creates initiatives aimed at facilitating and providing support for those suffering from ALS and their families."
