Major change coming to Scotiabank Saddledome
Flames fans will be getting a big upgrade for the venue's final years!
The Calgary Flames are finally getting their long-awaited new venue, as it was announced earlier this week that the official groundbreaking for their future home will begin this coming Monday. According to reports, the Flames are set to begin play in the yet-to-be-named arena starting in the 2027-28 season.
In the meantime, they'll play three more seasons at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the second oldest venue in the National Hockey League behind only Madison Square Garden in Manhattan. The major difference between the two venues is that the Garden underwent a billion-dollar renovation in the last decade, while the Saddledome is quite literally falling apart and remains badly outdated.
But Flames fans will be getting one particular upgrade for the in-game experience on what will be the final three years of Flames hockey at the Saddledome. A brand new scoreboard is in the process of being installed to replace the model that had been in place since the 2006-07 season:
“In partnership with our broadcast rightsholder Sportsnet, the Calgary Flames are proud to bring a new state of the art centre-hung scoreboard to the Scotiabank Saddledome for the start of the 2024-25 NHL season,” the Flames said in a statement. “The new Sportsnet Scoreboard will feature four 3.9mm video displays, each measuring 30’ wide by 18’ high, which are 3.75 times larger than the previous primary video screens.
“The Sportsnet Scoreboard also includes an upper LED halo ring with a 40’ circumference to showcase partnership and fan experience elements. For the remaining years inside the Scotiabank Saddledome, this technology will continue our commitment to elevate the fan experience for all sports fans in Calgary.”
