While the season for the Detroit Red Wings came to an end in disappointing fashion by just missing out on a Stanley Cup Playoffs berth, there were plenty of positives to look at throughout the campaign.
For one, 3rd year forward Lucas Raymond truly came into his own and registered career highs in both goals and assists, while laying the foundation to become a star in the NHL. He especially took on the role of hero late in the season with an electric performance against the Montreal Canadiens in Game No. 81, scoring both the game-tying goal late in regulation and the overtime winner.
Meanwhile, goaltender Alex Lyon became an unexpected unsung hero for the Red Wings after beginning the season as the 3rd string goaltender behind Ville Husso and James Reimer. But injury issues with Husso forced the Red Wings to begin playing Lyon, and he would make the most of his opportunity, reaching a new career-high in games played.
Both Lyon and Raymond elected to represent their native homelands of the United States and Sweden in the 2024 World Championship in Czechia, and it was Raymond who bested Lyon with an absolute snipe during today's matchup between the two nations:
Raymond is up for a new contract this summer, while Lyon is signed through the end of next season.
