Lomberg destroys Bastian's face and knocks him out of the game.
Ryan Lomberg showed Nathan Bastian no mercy on Friday night, pummeling his face until he could no longer continue.
This one is not for the faint of heart.
On Friday night, fans who tuned into the clash between the New Jersey Devils and Calgary Flames were witness to one of the most one-sided beatdowns we've seen all season in the National Hockey League.
The beatdown would come early as well, with just over 4 minutes in the game's opening period, after New Jersey Devils forward Nathan Bastian took exception to a dangerous looking hit from Calgary Flames defenseman Ryan Lomberg. Lomberg would deliver the hit to Devils forward Paul Cotter as Cotter was already falling to the ice after being hit by Flames defenseman Brayden Pachal, with Cotter's head taking the brunt of the second hit.
To Bastian's credit he would quickly challenge the very tough Lomberg to a fight following the hit, but unfortunately for Bastian he would bite off more than he could chew in this scenario.
It wasn't much of a fight at all, more of a one-sided beatdown on the part of Lomberg, as Lomberg would absolutely destroy his opponent by throwing several huge left hands at Bastian's head. Unfortunately for Bastian, every single one of the bombs thrown by Lomberg appeared to connect with Bastian's face. Bastian did not do a great job of defending himself and ate punch after punch until the NHL officials finally stepped in to save him, but the damage had already been done.
Bastian would leave the game, never to return, and to no one's surprise the Devils would confirm shortly after the fight that Bastian was done for the night. Even less surprising, the Devils confirmed that the reason for his absence was due to damage to his jaw from the onslaught of blows that were delivered by Lomberg.
Hopefully Bastian is going to be ok.
