Leafs score 2 shorthanded goals in under 30 seconds.
Embarrassing for the Senators.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have just shocked the Ottawa Senators just when it looked like the Senators had a chance to head into the first intermission with a little momentum on their side.
The Senators found themselves on the power play with a little over 6 minutes remaining in the game's opening frame, but in spite of the fact that they had the man advantage it would be the Leafs that would strike first. The game was tied at 0 - 0 after a solid start from Ottawa Senators goaltender Matt Murray and Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Jack Campbell, but Murray looked anything but solid on these shorthanded opportunities.
The first goal came courtesy of Leafs defenseman Justin Holl who picked a great time to record his first goal of this National Hockey League season, breaking the ice in the Battle of Ontario and putting the Leafs up 1 - 0. Leafs veteran TJ Brodie deserves a ton of credit on this play, as it was his effort at the other end of the ice that sparked this chance for the Leafs in the first place.
Murray got caught sliding across to make the save on the first goal, which you can certainly forgive, but less than 30 seconds later the 2 time Stanley Cup champion would cough up another goal while his team was on the powerplay. Once again TJ Brodie was a part of this one and once again we saw a Leaf pick up his first goal of the season, this time it was Ilya Mikheyev who found the back of the net after just his second game of the season due to injury.
This time around Murray looked considerably more shaky after what was a good start to the game, letting the puck find its way under his arm and into the back of the Senators net. The body language for Murray after the goal went in said it all, and no doubt fans in Ottawa are hoping that he can someday find his game again.
