Kyle Dubas took on the role of general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday, on top of his job as president of hockey operations.

Dubas came to Pittsburgh as team president on June 1 after he was not offered a new contract to continue on as general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. According to Elliotte Friedman, Dubas was waiting to see if he could get Maple Leafs assistant GM Brandon Pridham to join him and take on the GM position in Pittsburgh. But Pridham will be staying in Toronto after all.

“I think he (Dubas) wanted to see if Brandon Pridham, who worked with him in Toronto, was interested,” Friedman said on NHL Network.

“I think that Pridham decided to stay in Toronto earlier this summer and I think once that kind of move was known, that Pridham was likely to stay, I think that this was the course of action a lot of people expected.”

When first hired by the Penguins, Dubas had said that he would handle the GM position on an interim basis. However, now with his main candidate staying put, he apparently chose to take on the role himself.

The Maple Leafs hired Pridham in 2014. Prior to his career in Toronto, he worked at the NHL’s central registry and central scouting for 15 years.
