In case you missed it earlier today, the Toronto Maple Leafs pulled off three trades today, netting themselves veteran defensemen Luke Schenn, Erik Gustafsson and a 1st round pick.
Up first, the Leafs shipped 22 year old defenseman Rasmus Sandin to the Washington Capitals in exchange for 30 year old defenseman Erik Gustafsson and a 2023 1st round pick (BOS).
Sandin is just 22 years old and has been solid for the Leafs this season with four goals and 20 points in 52 games. He was selected in the 1st round (29th overall) by the Leafs back in 2018. After years of patience in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies, Sandin finally looked to be rounding into form... and now... boom... he's gone.
As for Gustafsson, he's just 30 years old and has been very solid for the Capitals this season. He has seven goals and 38 points in 61 games, which is a far cry from the crazy 60 point season that he put up with the Chicago Blackhawks back in 2018-19. He's on an expiring contract that pays him just $800,000. For what it's worth Sandin earns nearly double what Gustafsson earns with a salary of $1.4 million.
After that the Leafs shipped winger Pierre Engvall to the New York Islanders for a 2024 3rd round pick (NYI).
On its own this move doesn't make a ton of sense, until you realize that Leafs GM Kyle Dubas then flipped another 3rd round pick (2023, TOR) to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for veteran defenseman Luke Schenn.
So, in effect the Leafs have swapped out Engvall for Schenn. Not a bad move, honestly.
So, out the door are Sandin, Engvall and a 3rd round pick. Coming in the door are Gustafsson, Schenn, a 3rd round pick and a 1st round pick.
Honestly... that's a tidy bit of work by GM Dubas. Especially when you consider the cap restraints that his team is under. Combine these moves with the acquisitions of Ryan O'Reilly, Jake McCabe and Sam Lafferty and this may be Dubas' best trade season in his short career thus far. Thoughts, Leafs fans?
