Kakko and coach Laviolette go back and forth through the media

The coach and young player have a bit of a cold war brewing.

According to a report from NHL analyst Steve Dangle, the New York Rangers held a players' meeting yesterday where they discussed a plan for ridding the team of GM Chris Drury.

Dangle made the report on yesterday's Steve Dangle Podcast, insisting that players have turned on their GM and are now actively trying to have him removed from his position.

From Dangle:

"There was a players only meeting and it was not to discuss Peter Laviolette...that relationship is fine...Their main gripe is Chris Drury...They want him to either change his ways or be gone."

- Chris Drury

That's the least surprising thing I've heard in a while, to be honest.

It's clear that Drury forced out Trouba as an effort to 'shake up the room' and evidently it worked. There are rumors that Drury is trying to rid the team of both Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad, also. Two of the longest-serving, most prideful Rangers. I could see how rumors like that would begin to fracture a team's confidence in their GM.

Former 2nd overall pick Kaapo Kakko isn't hiding his frustration behind locker room doors though. He vented his anger to Rangers insider Mollie Walker today, expressing exasperation for being scratched from the lineup earlier this week.

It's clear that the kid is frustrated and Laviolette understands that, but tells the media that he'll be addressing those issues in-person.

The players feel like they were stabbed in the back by Drury and Laviolette now they're looking to return the favor. Hard to blame 'em...

What ultimately comes from this meeting remains to be seen because Rangers owner James Dolan has shown nothing but support for Drury since his hired him personally back in 2021.
