Late last night, the Los Angeles Kings traded goaltender Jonathan Quick to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of a deal for defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov and goaltender Joonas Korpisalo. The Kings are also sending a first-round pick to the Blue Jackets in the trade.
Rumblings of the blockbuster emerged after the Kings defeated the Winnipeg Jets 6-5 in a shootout, and then the trigger was pulling, stunning many fans, but no one was more shocked than Quick himself.
According to insider Frank Seravalli, Quick was furious when he was informed of the trade. To make things worse, the goalie was flying back with the rest of his now former team to Los Angeles.
“To say Jonathan Quick is unhappy with the trade, I’m told, is “an understatement.”
The entire #LAKings team was a bit down after the game, a win, and you could understandably see it in Anze Kopitar’s face after a 4-goal night.
Tough deal, Kings trading a franchise legend.”
There is no doubt that this is the end of an era in Los Angeles. The 37-year-old goalie backstopped the Kings to two Stanley Cup championships in 2012 and 2014. He earned the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP in 2012 and is a two-time winner of the William M. Jennings Trophy (2014, 2018).
He was selected 72nd overall by Los Angeles at the 2005 NHL Draft and has appeared in 743 career NHL games, all with the Kings, with a career .911 save percentage and 2.46 GAA.
He is set to become a pending unrestricted free agent in the final season of a 10-year, $58 million contract with an AAV of $5.8 million.
And he is also very unhappy...
