Canadiens make extremely concerning move on Sunday morning.
The Montreal Canadiens have made a move and it is a very bad sign for their playoff hopes.
There's no sugarcoating it, this is not a good sign at all.
On Sunday morning the Montreal Canadiens officially announced that they were calling up goaltender Cayden Primeau from the American Hockey League's Laval Rocket. While it's great that Primeau will likely get to feature in some very important games for the Canadiens, even if only in a backup role on the bench, the move is a terrible sign for the Canadiens and their playoff hopes.
The Canadiens of course lost the services of goaltender Samuel Montembeault in Game 3 of their opening round Stanley Cup playoff series against the Washington Capitals when Montembeault suddenly and unexpectedly pulled himself out of the game.
The decision to call up Primeau would indicate to me that Montembeault will be unable to play in Game 4, a huge blow to the Canadiens who have relied heavily on Montembeault this season. Adding to that concern is the fact that Montembeault was nowhere to be seen on the ice with his teammates this morning.
Primeau and the Laval Rocket are in the middle of a playoff battle of their own so there's no chance that this move was done carelessly by the Canadiens, and to me it is a clear sign that we will not see Montembeault in Game 4.
Update: Montembeault officially being considered day to day which rules him out of Game 4.
The Capitals also lost their starting goaltender in Game 3 due to injury but, in a cruel twist of fate for the Canadiens, while the Canadiens got bad news regarding their goalie on Sunday morning the Capitals received the exact opposite when it comes to goaltender Logan Thompson.
